The Amulet, sometimes called a Cross, reveals enemies that would otherwise be invisible (1.90) or cloaked and hard to see (1.92 and above). Though later versions list two levels of it, the second level has no use beyond what the first does. In future versions this may change.

The invisibility of enemies is set by checking the screen data flag "Invisible Enemies" in ZQuest. When using Invisible Enemies, most quest designers will put an amulet/cross icon on a floor tile in rooms where there are invisible enemies. This is to notify the player that they should have the amulet before proceeding on.

The Amulet was not in the Legend of Zelda. However, it was obtainable in Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, in which it automatically revealed invisible enemies.
