Letter

An item in Zelda Classic that allows you to buy from potion shops. The letter needs to shown to each potion shop only once. The letter's slot in the inventory can be replaced by a blue potion or red potion if either is held.

The Letter's only real use is to cause the Guy in a potion shop (originally an old woman) to speak and allow you to buy items. While many people change the item's graphic to a mushroom or a bottle, there is nothing stopping the quest maker from giving the player potions without first requiring the player to obtain the Letter item. This item originated in The Legend of Zelda.

Note that if Link possesses a level 2 letter, also known as "Letter (Used)", the message string and items in a potion shop room type will automatically appear without Link having to show it to the guy. Additionally, Link receives a level 2 letter when he shows a level 1 letter to the guy.

In The Legend of Zelda, this letter is obtained from the old man who says 'SHOW THIS TO THE OLD WOMAN.' Link must show this to the guy in a Potion Shop Room in order for the items to appear.
