The Compass is an item that is usually obtained in the dungeon. Upon picking the compass up, the game marks a specified screen on the current DMap. There can only be one marked screen per DMap.

The compass is often used to show the following locations:

  • A Triforce piece.
  • Where the Boss Key is located.
  • Where to get a major item.
  • Where the boss lurks.
  • Any other important location within the current DMap.

In The Legend of Zelda, the compass always pointed to the Triforce.

When this item is picked up on an NES Dungeon or Interior DMap, a blinking red dot is displayed on a specified cell of the Minimap for the current DMap. Once the Triforce on the current DMap is obtained, this dot stops blinking. NOTE: The compass marker is also applied to all DMaps of the same level as the DMap where the Compass was found.
