The sparkles will speckle the screen along the trail of the projectile they are assigned to. Each sparkle will complete one animation cycle and disappear. Thus, when you assign a sprite to each of the sparkle graphics, it must be animated to work properly. You may assign a different type of sparkle animation to each projectile type that supports sparkles.
In the unique case of the Fire Boomerang, the trail of sparkles left behind is also capable of damaging enemies that are hit by them.
